Stressing the SO part of that statement. It wasn’t great, but Thursday was an improvement over where I’d been. A final series score of 477 that felt closer to a 510. Tough lane conditions after the oil was torn apart by the league before us and then all the straight balls moved the oil around strangely. It made it really hard to read, especially given my amateur ability in the wizardry of oil.
The first two games were fairly similar, providing frustration and challenge in heavy doses. Thankfully, through all the past angst and working through it, I was able to keep my mental game intact and not let that make the situation worse. I managed to string together some decent spares to open up the night, but my strike ball just couldn’t seem to find the right path. My targeting wasn’t bad, so I started to move around. I only left three opens, but still squeezed out only a 153 to start.
The second game had the same issues as the first, as already alluded to. So, no need to describe that too much other than the sad 140 up on the screen. However, by the time that score flashed up in the final frame, I had an idea about how to get past the oil issues (after having figured out that it had to be that, considering everything else felt close to correct). I put away Hans (my Outlaw) and took out the seldom used Franz (my Bandit).
Franz provided exactly what I needed… Time. With the way it’s set-up and the polished surface, my Bandit breaks a lot later than my Outlaw. With that later reaction, I could glide past the rumble strips of oil and take advantage of the cleaner area closer to the pocket and make one quick last move (the straight-ballers weren’t hitting the pocket, so the oil wasn’t carried down in that area). It was a long day on Thursday, so I still felt tired and had to really focus to keep my timing and form (new and improved) in line, but overall I felt good about the game. I adjusted to the conditions. I adapted to a new ball in a relatively quick amount of time. I kept calm and dealt with what was in front of me.
Not so bad, hey? Again, light on the glory. But I will take what I can get.
This week, I will be bowling as much as humanly possible on Tuesday for practice because I won’t be able to make Thursday league due to work commitments. However, I have a great idea for a post later this week anyways (in addition to discussing whatever inhumane amount of bowling Tuesday ends up yielding). If everything goes according to plan…
Stay tuned and stay out of the gutters!
